As part of your inspection, you may be asked questions on:
· the nature of your citizenship
· your trip, and
· about anything you are bringing into the United States.
I have a passport, should I present that?
As of January 31, 2008, oral declarations will no longer be accepted. All U.S. and Canadian citizens will be required to present a valid passport or other documents for proof of citizenship. Persons over the age of 19 years must provide a government issued photo identification such as a drivers license, and proof of citizenship such as a birth or naturalization certificate. Persons 18 years of age and less must provide proof of citizenship. Nexus and FAST cards are also acceptable for proof of citizenship and identity.
Persons traveling by air to the United States have been required to present a valid passport as of January 23, 2007.
We may also need to examine your baggage or your car, which we have the legal authority to do. If we are checking your baggage, you will need to place it on the exam station and open it. (After the exam is completed, you will be asked to repack and close the baggage.) If you are unhappy with the way you are being treated, ask to speak to a CBP supervisor immediately, or you may make a complaint.

An individual may bring up to $100.00 worth of merchandise without paying duty (alcohol and cigarettes are subject to state and local taxes). This is allowed every 6 months.
Are you bringing prescription meds with you? Make sure they are in their original prescription container.
Taking your pets with you? Make sure you bring a valid rabies vaccination certificate with you. Although rarely asked for, you are required to present the records if asked. You may be “turned around” if you do not have them with you.

What authority does CBP have to inspect travelers?
The Congress of the United States has given U.S. Customs and Border Protection broad authority to conduct searches of persons and their baggage, cargo, and means of transportation entering the United States. There are many reasons for deciding to examine someone. CBP has a program of random checks that helps us calibrate our information regarding smuggling trends. Many people think that Officers only target people who look disreputable or suspicious, and are therefore offended when they themselves are singled out. Please be aware, some of CBP’s biggest seizures have come from inspections of “respectable looking” people, such as grandmothers, corporate executives, college professors, etc. Everyone is subject to a CBP inspection when they arrive in the U.S.
